How to choose a Pre-K-grade level, K1, and K2 school in Singapore

Picking a preschool in Singapore for your kids is an important and often difficult decision! Your neighbours and friends are potentially a good source for information, however it remains vital that you do the research on your own as only you know your child and what type of preschool would be a good fit for him or her. If your child has some sort of learning or behavioural disorder or some other type of special needs, it is even more important to make the right and informed choice.

Things you should consider when looking for international preschool in Singapore:

Who are the teachers?

One way to know that the preschool you are checking out is of higher quality is to know who the teachers are. The best preschools always hire teachers and staff with established credentials and work experience. Over the course of the year they form close relationships with both the students and their families, share their love and interest about learning and books, and manage the classroom and the students in a caring and almost parent-like way. If you can, try to set up a few one-on-one meetings with a few of the teachers so you can get a feel for them, what kind of people they are, and so on. This is important as it will give you the ability to decide if they are a good fit for your child and their overall attitude to children in general.

How is the children's time organized and spent?

The daily schedule and routines ought to include whole-group activities, which help with the building of social skills, as well as other time where children can decide what they prefer to work on, and are able to work in smaller tight-nit groups or by themselves. Physical activity is very important in the development of all children, especially boys, so having safe playgrounds available is a must not only for preschools but for primary, secondary and other schools as well. Some international schools offer huge campuses with a lot of facilities that include swimming pools for preschoolers as well as older students, football fields, climbing walls, etc. Physical exercise and activity should be encouraged and organized at least 2-3 times a week.

How is the classroom designed?

The classroom in a preschool should be designed in such a way that it  sparks the children's imaginations, drawing their attention and engagement making them inquisitive and eager to learn. The walls must showcase student artwork and writing that's interesting and creative. By way of example, should you choose to pay the classroom a visit in the springtime, you may see things like a bird's nest, butterfly nets, lots of flowers, etc. Seasonal items spread naturally in the classroom like that help with the building and expanding the children's vocabulary as well as retaining and remembering new words and concepts more easily.

Some of the things we talked about you can learn by simply giving the preschool a phone call and having a conversation with the staff. But if you want to get a better sense of the preschool and the atmosphere, you should schedule a visit and observe the process in the classroom  for a while and keep a special attention on the teacher and how engaged their students are.

Preschool is the foundation of the future of your child and it is very important in helping with building social skills as well as early learning and studying habits that will later be of great use to your child, so take the time to find the best one.
